The checklist
| Document | What it is for |
|---|
| December payslip | Shows the year's cumulative net taxable salary, to check the pre-filled figure |
| Bank annual tax summary | Interest and investment income for the year (often called the IFU) |
| Donation receipts | Tax reduction for gifts to eligible charities |
| Childcare invoices | Tax credit for childcare of young children (nursery, childminder) |
| Home help certificates | Tax credit for services at home, like cleaning or tutoring |
| Rental income summary | Rent received and costs, if you let a property (see our rental guide) |
Check the pre-filled figures
Your employer and your bank report your income to the tax office, so the amounts usually appear pre-filled. Mistakes still happen: a bonus counted twice, a change of employer, a missing account. Comparing two documents takes two minutes: the "cumul net imposable" at the bottom of your December payslip, and the totals on your bank's annual summary.
Do not leave reductions on the table
Reductions and credits are not pre-filled: if you do not declare them, you do not get them. Each needs its proof, so file the receipt the day it arrives: the association's tax receipt after a donation, the childminder's annual certificate in January, the home-help statement.
Your tax folder, filled as you go
Scan a payslip or a donation receipt: Manny files it in the right year, reads the amount, and shows you what is still missing before the deadline.
When to declare
The income tax return opens in spring for the previous year's income. Online deadlines depend on your département and usually fall between late May and early June. Set the reminder as soon as the dates are announced on impots.gouv.fr.
How long to keep the papers
The tax office can generally review a return for the three years that follow it. Keep each year's folder at least that long; payslips are worth keeping much longer, for your pension.
